Latest OP EDs Articles condeming Rio Tinto/Kennecott

The most condeming is from the Trib Ed Board, a complete turnaround from a year ago: “But the valley’s miserable air quality can no longer be tolerated. If it comes down to a choice between copper and breathing, that’s an easy call.”

For these five I (Terry Marasco) called a meeting with the Des news Ed Board and they were astounded at our info and asked us to write 5 OP EDs, and they printed them all. They had been printing pro KUC media and came to a “really?” moment after we presented. These five are a good overview:

The Utah Clean Air Alliance is working closely with local groups to encourage Kennecott Copper and their parent company Rio Tinto to reduce their poor air quality record and become better corporate citizens in the Salt Lake Valley. Kennecott pollutants dominate the airshed: actual percentages of certain airborne pollutants emitted by Kennecott compared to all sources: nitrous oxides, 26 percent; PM 10, 17 percent; PM 2.5, 26 percent; sulfur dioxide, 72 percent.

The Bingham Mine is the LARGEST open mining pit IN THE WORLD and it is in a densely populated area. We are not asking Kennecott/Rio Tinto to close the mine or stop the expansion but, as a highly profitable company polluting in a densely populated airshed to do better than Utah air and water quality standards allow. They have the money.

One Response to Kennecott

  1. linda clark says:

include health effects–connect the dots for people so they know why we shouldn’t allow the largest pit mine in the world to expand–directly upwind of wasatch front–not only 90% of utah’s population, but the most fetuses, babies, children, and old folks in the nation–all vulnerable populations.
